Most Dashboards Fail Because They Show Everything

Most dashboards fail because they try to show everything. Here's what actually works:

Data visualization has to capture the fundamentals. One look, minimal filtering, and it should drive your next immediate decision.

I've been intense about Data Viz, always going the extra step to create delightful visualizations that serve admins and executives in the most impactful way possible.

This obsession has made me quite good at dashboards. Three lessons:

  • Have a structural basis for every dashboard page.
  • Discern specific charts that drive decisions. Not everything is immediately valuable.
  • Cleanliness and speed above everything. A dashboard that takes two weeks to implement is two weeks of missed decisions.

Dashboards aren't eye candy.

Start treating dashboards as decision tools, not decoration. Your next business move depends on it.
